Choosing the Wedding Theme
The skies the limit when it comes to today’s wedding themes, literally! A daring couple may choose to parachute into their wedding ceremony. Or perhaps NASCAR gets your motor running, and you would prefer to say your vows standing on the start/finish line at Talladega. Traditional themes are still good choices, but nontraditional wedding themes are gaining in popularity.
If you’re more the romantic type than a traditional Victorian theme might just be right for you. For a Victorian feel, you might choose to hold your celebration at a historical site, old churches that resemble castles, a country inn tucked away from the hustle & bustle of the city, or even a garden. Good color choices would be white, ivory, pink, rose, and pastels. For flowers choose from such selections as: roses, potpourri, stephanotis, and baby’s breath. You will want to incorporate antique lace, cameos, and pearls into your wedding attire. If your ceremony is in the evening, a walkway lit by candlelight would be a romantic touch. Further special touches might be horse-drawn carriages, violins, or harp music.
A less traditional wedding theme would be a beach wedding. This could be held on a real beach, or a beach you have created in a backyard. Color schemes could use colors such as red, white, and navy blue for example. Lilies and carnations would make a lovely choice for this particular theme. If you want to make your own beach, here are some simple suggestions. Purchase a tarp and white children’s sandbox sand (available at most garden and discount stores) in the amount you will need for the size of beach you’re creating. Laying a tarp down first will allow you to recycle the sand into sandboxes for the children of relatives or friends after your day is over. You can decorate with starfish and beach candles, sea shells, kid’s pails, shovels, beach chairs, and colorful umbrellas. A keepsake that you can gift your guests with would be small glass beakers filled with the sand from your beach ceremony, sealed with corks. The menu could be a simple BBQ. A great ending to your party could be a fireworks display. Just keep safety in mind and especially with youngsters in attendance.
A Western Wedding theme could be held at a dude ranch, in a barn, or a backyard. The colors red, blue, black, white, silver, and turquoise would be excellent choices. You can decorate with flowers such as wildflowers, daisies, black-eyed Susans, and sunflowers. For your attire you might consider using gingham, denim, bandanas, boots, hats, belt buckles, and bolo ties. Cut loose with a good ol’ square dance, or have fiddlers, and guitars.
There are plenty of other wedding themes that you could choose from. If you can dream it, you can probably find a way to create it. The wedding theme should reflect the personalities of the couple without taking away from the special meaning of this day. Don’t forget to let your guests know beforehand as to whether the theme of your wedding calls for casual clothing versus more formal attire.
