During the 1980’s entrepreneurs and business men from many Asian countries like Thailand and the Philippines set up businesses to introduce American men to eligible women. They printed glossy catalogues with brief biographies about the women and distributed them. The American men were encouraged to start conversations with them through the mail. If the relationship progressed the American men usually paid a visit to her in her native country. If a romance blossomed they couple was eventually married and moved to the United States.

With the collapse of the Berlin Wall and eventual fall of the Soviet Union countries across Eastern Europe and Western Asia also entered in the mail order bride arena. However the single largest change to occur to the industry was the development of the internet. It allowed a larger number of potential brides to reach a wider audience. As written correspondence gave way to email relationships developed quicker and marriages came more rapidly. Now with VOIP communications potential brides can converse with one another the same way would call your friend down the street.

There are many negative stereotypes associated with the mail order bride business and some of them do have a basis in reality. There certainly are many brides who will say or do anything to get married and become an American citizen, once they have been married for over a year divorce proceeding begins almost immediately. This is certainly something to be aware of and on the lookout for. However there are probably many more potential brides looking for a better place to live under a free government with more opportunities and man who appreciates and loves them.
